Welcome to our website of books on surgery Multiple Choice questions (MCQ). Surgery is a vast subject with many text books and journals. Preparing for exams is tough and a medical student and surgery resident is not expected to go through all of these books. However knowing when to consult which book is important. Some books should form a part of daily reading habit and some of them should be part of consultation. Here we are listing some of the books we found useful in our surgery rotation.

Sabiston Text book of Surgery
What I like about this book is the simplicity with which everything is explained. It touches on the basic as well as complex issues without making too much of fuss. The clinical trials have been cut down from the previous issues and only the most relevant and recent trials have been mentioned.
The initial chapters on basic surgery are a bit lenghty I feel.
Urology and plastic surgery chapters are not upto the mark although abdominal surgery and cardiac surgery chapters are excellent.
The book is not heavily priced and with its high resolution images and lucid style is a must have for every surgery resident.
Free CD with images tables and figures
Another favourite amongst the residents. This book is more popular in USA and Canada. In this book you should not miss out breast, thyroid and general surgery. The conceptual explanations are good and so are the tables and figures. Personally I have not read anything beyond a few chapters but the reviews I get from my colleagues are good.
If you like this book dont forget to go for the pretest also.
Schwartz Principles of Surgery- Standard Surgery book
This is my all time favourite. Although a new edition of this book has not come after 1994, this still is a book to follow. It is a surgical atlas with step by step schematic diagrams. The surgical technique is explained wonderfully well.
Although much has changed over 16 years but this book was so advanced at that time that you never feel that you are not reading something new. Anatomy remains the same
This is a must have book in your collection although hard to find.
Rob and Smith Surgical Atlas Text Book
A masterfully compiled manuscript. It gives a whole new american perspective to the surgical practise.
This book mainly focusses on operative indications and techniques without going too much into epidemology and etiopathogenesis. Further the editorial given at the end of every chapter is an eye opener and very well written
The strong points of the book are its attention to even the minute detail and its description of the surgery procedure.
It also comes with a free CD
Mastery of Surgery- A Book for all practising Surgeons
This is my bible and I need to know it cover to cover to clear my exam. Its not a easy book to read unlike the others on top but it has some really good chapters and latest papers. I find it quite cumbersome and tiring but the job has to be done. It is divided into Esophagus, stomach and small intestine, hepatobiliary and pancreatic and lower GI. The chapters on upeer and lower GI Surgery are interesting and new. Esophagus is boring and very exhaustive, hepatobiliary is better read from Blumgart.
Shackelford's Text Book Surgery of Alimentary canal- A Book Par Excellence
Zollinger text book Atlas Surgery
The modern atlas of General Surgery. This is not as good a text book as Rob and Smith but it is the nearest one. I have personally gone through some of the chapters and they look good. I have seen most of the modern day surgery residents carry this book.
Slightly deviating from the topic- This is not a curriculum book
Book by the Boss himself. If you are a liver transplant surgeon or want to be one you should not miss this
To be honest I have not read this book. I ve only heard about it and have been waiting to lay my hands on it ever since. This book is by Thomas Starzl and if you are on this page, I obviously believe you know who he is. It is a story of the man himself told as a third person. Check out the reviews in amazon before buying this one. You might not like this one

Prestest and Multiple Choice Questions
In the end I am listing some multiple choice question books. The one by Sabiston was good but its not coming out any more. I have not read these new ones but MCQs always help to conceptualize better.
