Bernhard von Langenbeck
We remember him today by the name of his instrument used in almost every surgery; the Langenbeck retractor.
He was a German Surgeon in the mid 18th century. In 1842 he became Professor of Surgery and Director of the Friedrichs Hospital at Kiel.
His best quality was the ability to decide when not to operate. His main area of interest was military surgery and he was a master of managing gun shot wounds.
He is also known as the one to start the concept of "surgical residency".He devised a method where new students would have to remain in the hospital day in and day out and take care of the patients. Billroth and Kocher were the product of this system.

Thomas Starzl
Father of the modern organ transplant surgery. Born in Iowa, United States in 1926 he has spent most of his time developing the techniques of liver transplantation.
In late 1970s and early 80s he was perfecting the art of immunosuppression.
His interest in the medical field developed when his mother died of breast cancer. He spent his early medical carrier and transplant experiments in University of Colarado before moving to the prestigious university of Pittsburgh in 1981.
What he did after that is a sort of legend in medical history. His two most important works were refinement of technique and development of immnuosuppressive drug cyclosporine.
He later wrote an autobiography "The Puzzle People" in which he recounts how his initial transplants were failures and he had to bear the wrath of the media. Had he given up at that point transplantation as a whole would have suffered a great setback
